My biohacking gadgets
Part of biohacking is using technology to assist you with measuring changes in your biology, or to actually induce a specific change. These are the gadgets/tools I use regularly.
-Ketonix Breath Ketone Analyzer
One of the many diets commonly employed by biohackers is the Ketogenic diet. This is a high fat, moderate protein, and low carbohydrate diet (typically under 30-50g) that places your body into a state of nutritional ketosis - meaning the body is primarily metabolizing fat for fuel. Many people have successfully used a ketogenic diet for fat loss, as well as improving many health markers. A way to test and see if you are actually in a state of ketosis is to check either your breath, urine, or blood for the presence of ketone bodies. Well, since I don't want prick my fingers or pee on test strips all of the time, I use the Ketonix breath analyzer to check my breath for acetone (one type of ketone body). After breathing into the device for 10-20 seconds, it will let you know if you're in ketosis. Cool stuff.
-Basis Peak Health and Fitness Tracker
This piece of wearable equipment, the Basis Peak watch, has 5 sensors on it that measure heart rate, movement, skin temperature, ambient temperate, and skin perspiration. The coolest part of this watch is that it automatically tracks sleep cycles, letting me know when I was in either REM, deep, or light sleep. No need to tell the watch that you are going to bed, it figures it out based on movement and heart rate. It's great to check how your sleep is going and make changes to compensate.
-Emwave 2 Heart Rate Variability (HRV) Trainer
This little biofeedback device can detect the spacing between each beat of your heart, and quantify it as a measure called Heart Rate Variability. If the space between your heart beats are very short and uniform, you are stressed out. Think of how fast your heart races when you are scared or nervous or stressed. No bueno. However, if the spaces are longer and not-so-uniform, this means you are calm and centered. The device tells you which side of the spectrum you are in, and "trains" you to change your heart rate variability by guiding you through breathing exercises. I use this a couple of times a week to relax. It is almost like a guided meditation with instant feedback.
-Power Lung Trainer
The Power Lung is like weight training for your lungs. It's a breathing device that adds resistance to both inhales and exhales. Unfortunately, I don't have a way to measure my lung capacity (yet) but I'm giving it a shot and will judge it subjectively.
